Head of Communications

Job description

Wefarm, the world’s largest farmer-to-farmer digital network, enables farmers to connect with each other and key partners over SMS to solve problems, share ideas, obtain vital products and services, and spread innovation, through utilising the latest machine learning technology.

Small-scale agriculture is the biggest industry on earth, with more than a billion farmers globally supplying 70% of the world's food and commodities, yet remaining digitally unconnected. Until Wefarm, no other had built a digital platform for these farmers to share their vital insights, without having to go online!

Since our launch in 2015 we have grown to serve 1.9 million farmers across the world, who share more than 30,000 Qs & As per day. Wefarm has recently secured $13 million in Series A funding from some of the world’s leading VCs, including True Ventures in Silicon Valley, and we are looking to add to a world-class team based across London, Nairobi, Kampala and Dar-es-Salaam.

Join us and be a part of our mission to build an ecosystem for global agriculture, with the farmer at the centre!

The role

We are looking for an experienced communications expert who is able to lead on the overall development of the communications strategy and team for Wefarm. You will be excited about engaging deeply with Wefarm’s mission to build an ecosystem for small-scale farmers globally at one of the UK’s fastest-growing startups, and be able to build integrated plans and campaigns to reach and inspire consumers, B2B customers and investors alike, in all markets in which we operate. While over time you will build a global team at the company, you will also have to be comfortable initially building and executing the strategy directly yourself with support from local agencies as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver a comms strategy for Wefarm, with a focus on articulating Wefarm’s vision, mission, and progress to all key stakeholders - whether consumers, B2B customers and partners in East Africa, investors in Silicon Valley or potential employees in London
  • Utilise Wefarm’s unique insights to create inspiring and timely stories and campaigns that help showcase the power of the community, and highlight Wefarm as a trusted source of economic data.
  • Manage all communication channels, including our website and social media accounts, as well as our employees and public speaking events.
  • Identify and build and manage strong relationships with a number of stakeholders, including journalists, influencers, media in various global markets, and key brands and partnerships.
  • Work with local agencies to be able to execute effectively in multiple countries and languages, and manage budgets accordingly.
  • Collaborate closely with teams like Growth, Operations and Product to ensure a consistent tone of voice and narrative is put in place across all touchpoints.
  • Partner with the Founder & CEO on Wefarm media, content and external messaging, and support on internal comms.

    Requirements

    • At least 5 years experience in comms, ideally with experience in, or knowledge, of startups.
    • Proven track record of being able to deliver strategies and campaigns across multiple audiences and countries.
    • Team management and development experience.
    • Ability to manage and coach senior leadership with regards to public speaking and media training.

    Rewards package and remuneration

The total rewards package and remuneration will be based on experience and potential, but is highly competitive and will include share options. We believe in our team being not only the executors of Wefarm’s visions but the makers and owners of it!

As a global business, travel is essential to who we are, and will be a perk of the job. We also host an annual whole company offsite (Wecamp), previously held in Kenya and Uganda. In addition, we have a generous pension package, flexible working environment (within reason of course!), and we value spending time together boarding the weekly lunch train, sharing some drinks on a Friday and frequent social events throughout the year.

We will review applicants on an ongoing basis. Due to the high number of applicants we will, unfortunately, only be able to respond to shortlisted candidates.
